Gower Sun, Sand and Sea

Aerial View of Three Cliffs Bay: Image by GowerScapes.comIf you are visiting Gower for the amazingly stunning beaches, bays and coves - you won't be disappointed! There are many beautiful beaches, bays and coves along the Gower coastline, each with unique character and charm.

Before your visit, please take a few moments to think about your safety, and what provisions you may require. Whilst Gower is safe place to visit, there are also many natural dangers which you should consider: Some of Gower's beaches are prone to 'rip tides' Rips are strong currents running out to sea that can easily take swimmers from shallow water out beyond their depth. They are especially powerful in larger surf, but are also found around river mouths, estuaries and man-made structures like piers and groynes. How to spot a rip current: discoloured, brown water (caused by sand being stirred up from the seabed); foam on the water's surface; debris floating out to sea; a rippled patch of sea, when the water around is generally calm.; in some areas it is not uncommon to spot an 'adder' Adders are snakes, and are the only venomous snake native to Britain. They have the most highly developed venom injecting mechanism of all snakes. However, the adder is not an aggressive animal and will only use their venom as a last means of defence, usually if caught or trodden on. Most are distinctively marked with a dark zigzag running down the length of the spine and an inverted 'V' shape on the neck. Males are generally white or pale grey with a black zigzag. Females are a pale brown colour, with a darker brown zigzag. Some adders are entirely black and can be mistaken for some other species. The adder is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 from being killed, injured or sold, and can occupy a variety of habitats, including open woodland, hedgerows, moorland, sand dunes, riverbanks, bogs, heathland and mountains. If bitten: With proper treatment, the worst effects of an adder bite are nausea and drowsiness, followed by severe swelling and bruising in the area of the bite. Most people who are bitten were handling the snake. If bitten, seek urgent medical attention. Treat adders with respect and leave them alone. basking in the summer sun; on the vast bay at Whiteford, the fast incoming tide should not be underestimated; and be aware of the dangerous drops present along some of Gower's coastal footpaths.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to stay safe during your Gower visit:

  • When in the sun - it is very important that everyone, children and those with fair skin in particular, should use a high-factor sun cream, wear a sun hat, sit in the shade and cover up from 11.00am - 2.00pm when the sun is at its strongest
  • When in the sea - take care bathing, swim within your depth and parallel to the shore
  • If present, bathe in between the red and yellow flags - this area is patrolled by lifeguards
  • Never enter the water if the red flag is flying - red means danger!
  • Always check and be aware of the local tide times
  • Inflatable toys and airbeds should not be used in the sea
  • IN AN EMERGENCY - DIAL 999 - ASK FOR THE COASTGUARD

Lifeguards will be on patrol between the red and yellow flags from 10.00am to 6.00pm every day from June to September, and are available for advice if you are unsure about tides or bathing conditions. The RNLI has produced a range of safety information designed to help you stay safe in and near water. Please visit the RNLI website for further information: http://www.rnli.org.uk

Please help keep the beaches of Gower and Swansea Bay clean! Be aware that litter can cause countless minor injuries as well as damaging wildlife and habitat.
